The Hong Kong Soccer Sevens Women’s tournament has continued to evolve and the 2026 edition saw eight teams battle it out for the title. One of the teams involved was the Hong Kong China Women’s team who lost in the knock out round to eventual winners Urawa Reds Ladies (Japan). Regardless of the result, all the teams that took part had the chance to play against teams from around the world and experience a variety of footballing styles.
Wai Yuen Ting, one of the key mainstays of the Hong Kong Women’s team, is no stranger to high level competition having had playing experience abroad with Albanian football club Vllaznia, Chonburi FA and Kaohsiung Attackers Football Club.

Wai said the Soccer Sevens allowed for greater cultural exchanges between players and fans due to the numbers of overseas teams who fly into Hong Kong for the three day festival.
“There are opportunities for the younger players to play and there are great occasions for cultural exchanges between the various clubs / countries in such a vibrant stadium. I think this environment creates a great atmosphere for the players and the audience and for football in Hong Kong! It was a fantastic experience!

Being able to play against players from different countries and footballing cultures is really unique. This is a wonderful event!”
Ricardo Rambo, head coach of the Hong Kong women’s team, stressed that the football carnival consistently provides a great opportunity for up and coming players to gain greater exposure to tournament play.

“Since Women’s football was implemented at the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens, this has allowed the public to see the growth of Women’s football. A lot of young players can have this opportunity to play and this allows them to have an enjoyable time! Many overseas teams also come to play and this is a positive experience for them.”
