Cai McGunnigle: “I Want to Play for Scotland, but the Door to HK Remains Open”

For young football talent, the hardest decision is not just where you want to go, but when it’s time to stay put. For Hong Kong Football Club’s (HKFC) rising prospect, Cai Gabriel McGunnigle, the immediate future hangs in professional limbo, tied closely to his club’s fate.

“That’s on the FA, and we have to wait and see.”

With HKFC’s top-flight status currently uncertain, McGunnigle is keeping an open mind but admits his heart remains with the club if they secure safety. Speaking to us on Day 2 of the HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens 2026, he revealed:

“Regarding next year, I’ve not made any decisions on anything, as of now. But if we stay in the Premier League next season, I think I will definitely stay.”

McGunnigle’s focus remains squarely on his long-term growth on the pitch. For him, the priority is simple: developmental minutes on the pitch. He emphasised:

“As a young player, you need to be playing. At the end of the day, your development needs to be through games.”

While his immediate focus remains on consolidating his game locally, a move back to Europe is the ultimate destination on his roadmap.

“Moving abroad is definitely my end goal—obviously to play at the highest level possible in the Scottish Premier League. I definitely plan on going abroad at some point, but as of now, I’m not 18 yet, so I have to wait on that.”

Scotland First, But Love for Hong Kong

“Scotland’s my first pride, ambition, and dream. I want to play for the men’s senior team.”

“Seeing boys like Finlay Curtis. He was at the Sevens a couple of years ago, and now he’s off to Steve Clarke’s squad. Things like that are unbelievable. It’s something I aspire to do as well.”

Scotland manager Steve Clarke revealed the reason for selecting Findlay Curtis into their squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup:

“He has got something a little bit different to what we’ve got. He’s shown he can score a goal, he’s finished the season in a great place, and it’s nice to have a young one in the squad.”

McGunnigle points to Finlay Curtis—who starred at the HKFC Soccer Sevens just a few years ago and earned a call-up to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad—as his personal blueprint.

While he continues his development on the European youth stage, McGunnigle holds a deep emotional bond with Hong Kong. He refused to close the door on representing the city that raised him.

“It’s something I obviously wouldn’t knock down the chance of playing for Hong Kong because it is an unbelievable establishment.”

“I’ve grown up here in Hong Kong, and I’ve got so much love for it. I think there’s truly no place like Hong Kong. I’m eligible to obtain a Hong Kong passport.”
