Kitchee confirm the signing of Australian center-back Matt Smith in preparation for their ACL quest.
Born in England in 1982, Matt Smith eventually moved to Australia to pursue his professional football career. He has been named as captain for A-league side Brisbane Roar as well as Thai League 1 club Bangkok Glass, accumulating more than 200 appearances and scoring a total of 12 goals. Standing 1.8m tall, the 36-year-old defender also collected three caps for the Australian national team back in 2012.
Kitchee hope that Smith’s experience will strengthen their defense for the second half of the season, and particularly ahead of their ACL qualification, which starts on February 12th when they visit Malaysian side Perak away.
Given the limitation of foreigners in the Hong Kong Premier League, it is expected that Smith will replace Kim Bongjin’s spot as an AFC player. The Korean defender could be loaned to another local club, though his destination has yet to be confirmed.
