Southern came out on top as the deserved winners over Rangers in their 3-0 away win in front of 458 fans on Sunday afternoon, April 1st at Sham Shui Po Sports Ground, thanks to goals from Beto Fronza, Wellingsson de Souza and Leung Tsz-chun.
Southern started off lively and dangerously and came close in the 7th minute when Chan Siu-kwan drove past three defenders into the box and saw his shot blocked by Wong Tse-yeung. Marcos de la Espada immediately followed up with the loose ball, but it was cleared off the line by Mauricio just in time. In the 20th minute de Souza received a fine through-ball on the left and beat Wong Tse-yeung on the one-on-one, however, this time it was Marko Krasic who cleared the ball off the line. Things got tougher for Rangers as Mauricio came off injured in the 30th minute and was replaced by Chung Sing-lam. Soon after, Beto Fronza slotted the ball in after some goalmouth scramble following a Michael Luk corner. Rangers had a chance to equalize just before half time when Tse Tak-him missed Lau Chi-lok’s cross from the right, but Lai Lok-yin’s header went wide.
Southern continued to press on after the break and doubled their lead in the 69th minute. Chan Man-fai’s freekick was met by Chan Siu-kwan inside the box, whose header was blocked, but de Souza scored on the rebound. Substitute Leung Tsz-chun added the final goal in the 81st minute when he received a fine pass from Marcos de la Espada on the left and scored with a powerful shot. Cheng Siu-kwan hit the crossbar, which was almost the last action of the game, to keep the scoreline at 3-0 to Southern.
Rangers remain at the rock bottom of the table with only 5 points from 14 games and would require at least 3 wins from their last 4 matches to stay up. Southern stay at 5th place and are now only 2 points short of Eastern above them.
