March 31st 2026 will see the unfortunate sight of India hosting the Hong Kong men’s team in a dead rubber Asian Cup 2027 qualifier. Both sides went through a roller coaster of matches in their quest to reach the Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia and both fell short.

Hong Kong’s famous opening 1-0 Group C win over India at a packed Kai Tak Sports Park; a joyous occasion at the time, now seen as a false dawn in a footballing sense. A new shiny stadium overshadowing the structural issues which have plagued the domestic Hong Kong game for decades.

The defeat to Singapore at Kai Tak Sports Park was the writing on the wall for Hong Kong while India have struggled all campaign and now are placed dead last in group C with two points and no wins.

The India Men’s team fall from grace has been spectacular; from being a finalist in the last Asian Cup in Qatar and breaking into the top 100 FIFA rankings as recently as 2023, to a total crisis and potentially years in the international wilderness.

Both Hong Kong and India have the potential to truly be regional greats though have been held back by structural and systematic issues and the Group C table does not lie or hide the truth.

Ashish Negi, India Football Expert and media celebrity, looked back on India’s campaign through rose-tinted glasses and gave his analysis on what went wrong and the direction for Indian football in the future.

Negi acknowledged the tough Asian Cup qualifying campaign for India and was probed if there were any positives to take from these series of games.

“In simple words, No! This is the worst-ever Asia Cup qualifiers campaign for India in recent history, especially now that the Asian Cup has been expanded to 24 teams!”

Like other nations, Indian football has now reached out across the diaspora (OCI- Overseas Citizens of India and PIO – Persons of Indian Origin) and recruited players like Perth born Ryan William and Nepal born, Abneet Bharti. Negi gave his opinion on this move to source more players from abroad as the way forward.

“Ryan Williams playing for India is unlike that of other Asian countries that bring in foreign-born players, as India doesn’t allow dual citizenship and requires a long-term process to acquire a passport.

Ryan has gone through a long process to obtain an Indian passport to fulfill his grandparents’ dream. As of now, there are no noteworthy players who want to go through the process of 3-4 years to get an Indian passport.”

Negi expanded and explained further on the  factors / issues that really need to be resolved for India football to move forward again

“The AIFF (All India Football Federation ) needs to make sure the next elections happen on time and then plan for the next cycle because there are some decisions which need to be taken, but it is not clear whether the current regime can take those decisions. India needs a coach who can plan for the next 3-4 years, not just for the next match!”

The result won’t matter on March 31st though for both sides, still dealing with the disappointment of missing out on the 2027 finals, a chance to showcase new talent and rebuild for a brighter future.

For Hong Kong and India, another desert adventure in 2027 now, is just a mirage………
