Seoul Searching as Hong Kong Triumph on Penalties

This past Saturday saw a cozy sense of familiarity; a sun-baked Hong Kong stadium, a decent crowd and another competitive ‘friendly’ in the form of the annual Lunar New Year Cup.

The tournament remains one the world’s most uniquely evolving tournaments as  invited teams have ranged from clubs sides, national outfits to all-star teams. In 2026, it was the turn of K-League giants, FC Seoul, who were fresh from their 2-2 Asian Champions league Elite draw with Sanfrecce.

Hong Kong stadium, now considered a grand old venue and still majestic in its own unique way, saw just over 14,000 fans go through the turnstiles to see the  Hong Kong representative team defeat FC Seoul in a close and somewhat entertaining fixture.

For the Hong Kong team, the disappointment of that infamous loss to Singapore still lingers though under the watchful eyes of interim manager, Roberto Losada, a chance to reform and rebuild.

The tight match had opportunities for both teams with FC Seoul’s Anderson Oliveira and Park Soo-il’s creative play in  midfield in the first half leading to several chances for the visitors.

Hong Kong took an early lead in the 21st minute when striker, Junior, connected brilliantly with a cross delivered by the surging Jay Haddow from the right wing.

FC Seoul equalized in the 57th minute, as Patryk Klimala skillfully latched onto a through ball and flicked it into the goal to the delight of the small band of hardcore FC Seoul fans who had flown to Hong Kong.

With the score all square at 1-1 at full time, the game proceeded to a penalty shootout. Hong Kong emerged victorious, winning the shootout 5-4, with Jordan Lam converting the decisive penalty, to the delight of the home crowd.

Striker, Manuel Bleda Rodríguez, said the home side were confident that they could defeat one of the best club sides in Asia.

“We believe in our job and we knew the game would be tough but with the hard work of all the players and the support of all the fans, we achieved the win! It was an amazing experience and I am very happy to help win the trophy for all!”

A satisfying win for the home side and another glorious historical chapter of one of most uniquely evolving competitions in the world.

A wonderful sense of familiarity and long may it continue……
