After another exciting Premier League season had come to an end last weekend, the 2018/19 Hong Kong Top Footballer Awards ceremony was held on the evening of May 22nd, with over 600 guests attending, including HKFA staff, team players, club officials, media and sponsors.
With an opening speech delivered by Timothy Fok, President of HKFA, the gala officially began. First item on the agenda was to hand the trophies to this year’s league champions and the runners-up, Tai Po and R&F, respectively. Both clubs have achieved their best results ever in their own franchise history.
Individually, Igor Sartori of Tai Po came out as the biggest winner of the night by receiving four awards. The Brazilian forward came on the stage to receive Most Favorite Player, an award decided by over 8,000 public voters. Later on, he was announced as Players’ Player of the Year, before being selected as one of two best forwards in the Hong Kong Top Footballers category. Most importantly, however, Sartori also received the Footballer of the Year award. There is no doubt that the Brazilian was a major threat throughout the season as the second-best team scorer across all competitions, while having provided the most assists in the Tai Po squad.
On top of that, four players from the league-winning club were also included in the Hong Kong Top Footballers segment: Eduardo Praes, Fung Hing-wa, Wong Wai, and Philip Chan Siu-kwan. Their head coach Lee Chi-kin became the recipient of the Coach of the Year trophy, edging out Kenneth Kwok of Yuen Long and Alex Chu of Kitchee.
In order to honour the efforts in women’s fooball, the award Women’s Footballer of the Year was added to the program for the first time this year, with the inaugural winner being Wong Shuk-fan of Happy Valley.
