Benfica de Macau is 2015 Macau Elite League Champion

The 2015 Macau Elite League (Liga de Elite) season has come to an end and for the second time in a row Benfica de Macau has been crowned champion.

We entered the last round knowing that Ka I and Benfica were separated by only 1 point. Both teams had to win if they wanted to keep their chances alive, but their final fixtures were not that challenging, so no one expected any big surprises. Eventually, Benfica thrashed Chuac Lun 7-0 and Ka I won over Policia 3-1.

In the end Benfica proved to be the better team and lived up to the pre-season expectations that made them the top candidate for winning the title. Ka I on the other hand started the season with a lot of uncertainties, in spite of being one of the biggest teams in Macau. However, the newly appointed coach Josecler did a great job in putting pressure on Benfica until the very last round.

The big surprise of this season was C.P.K., which finished in the 3rd spot after beating Monte Carlo 3-1 in the last round. So the latter had to settle down on the 4th place. The expectations for C.P.K. in this season remained very low and with setting a humble goal of reaching the league’s top 5, they certainly overshadowed Monte Carlo and Sporting de Macau, which shared aspirations in winning the title.  Especially for Sporting, last year’s runner up, the 2015 season turned out to be a huge disappointment, in which they had to deal with a lot of injured players.

The remaining teams were Lai Chi (6th), which relied on a very young and talented squad this year, Policia (7th) and Chuac Lun (8th). Casa de Portugal (9th) and Macau U-23 (10th) will have to face relegation, with the MFA development team only acquiring 1 point throughout the entire season . Casa de Portugal fought with Chuac Lun until the very the last round, but the latter lost this little relegation battle by just two points.

Brazilian striker William Carlos Gomes (Benfica) finished as top scorer with 23 goals, followed by Portuguese Bruno Brito (Sporting) with 18 goals.
