Eastern came out as comfortable winners in a very one-sided game against Rangers on Labour Day, May 1st, in front of 563 fans at Sham Shui Po Sports Ground
It was also the first occasion for Gigi Law to take charge as the main referee in a top flight league game, however she had relatively little to do. Rangers started the game lively, as Shu Sasaki sprinted the space down the left to drive inside the box, where his shot went wide. Eastern reacted minutes later, when Clayton Afonso headed in from a Xu Deshuai corner to open the score. At the half hour mark, Xu Deshuai picked up Lo Kong-wai at the edge of the box, who then dribbled past his defender and powered in a screamer just under the bar to make it 0-2 at half time.
Eastern maintained their control of the game after the restart, while Rangers continued to lose their momentum. In the 58th minute, Xu Deshuai found Manuel Bleda in the box with a long ball, who skipped past the out-coming Wong Tse-yeung and sent the ball into the empty net, 0-3. Five minutes later, Michel Lugo chested down Bai He’s cross from the right to volley it home to make it 0-4. In the 77th minute, Yusuke Igawa headed in his first goal in Hong Kong from a Lam Hok-hei corner to make it 0-5. Rangers’ closest chance came at the 81st minute when Zhang Jun’s curling long shot from the right hit the post, and Lai Lok-yin could not get on the rebound. The scoreline could have been even higher, but both Bleda and substitute Bruno Correa wasted their remaining chances.
Following the win, Eastern secured the fourth place in the league of the season while Rangers were confirmed on the relegation spot.
