  • Last year’s champions will be looking for another solid season in the league, and will be the first club from Hong Kong to participate in the group stages of the AFC Champions League in 2017.
  • Fans of girl power will no doubt be impressed by the fact that Eastern are the first club to ever win a top flight championship under the stewardship of a female coach.
  • Previously managed by Bobby Moore and boasting the likes of Alan Ball that have donned their blue shirt, they are the oldest surviving rivals of South China and are a good choice for those interested in supporting a more traditional club.

Manuel Bleda Rodriguez

A Spanish striker (centre) who has plied his trade with the likes of Tajik side Istiklol FC, he arrives at Eastern as a player that will be relied on heavily for goals. This should be no problem for him, however, as his previous goal-scoring record at other clubs shows, and he undoubtedly has everything a striker needs to set this league alight. Eastern were established in 1932 as Eastern Athletic Association. Though their first title came in the 1955-56 season, they were particularly successful in the 1990’s where they won 3 back-to-back titles beginning in the 1992-93 campaign. English legends such as Bobby Moore (as manager), Alan Ball and Graham Paddon have been involved with the club, and they were a mainstay of the top division until they were relegated in 1997. The team were, however, invited to return to the top flight for the 2007-08 season, but they then opted to return to the third division after just two seasons. Eastern eventually returned to the first division in 2013 where they have since gone from strength to strength, finishing as runners up in the inaugural Premier League season. Under chairman Leung Shou Chi, who is keen to create a brand with the team and more recently signed a partnership deal with Real Madrid, they took the Premier League by storm last year, winning the division for the first time in 20 years with a game to spare.
