HKPL: Strong signs for 10-team league

Published by:

According to – usually well informed – Oriental Daily, it looks like the Hong Kong Premier League will eventually move on to the long anticipated 10-team format next season! Following the struggle of some clubs to secure the necessary funding for the top flight, the HKFA seems willing to approve Wong Tai Sin’s appeal and suspend their relegation to stay in the Premier League. That means, together with freshly promoted Tai Po FC, the club roster for next season would feature four district teams: Yuen Long, Southern District, Wong Tai Sin, and Tai Po. Each round would  consist of 5 fixtures, making it very likely that the Sapling Cup will be scrapped in return (no tears shed for that one).
While it is unlikely that we see Guangzhou R&F fielding a development team next season, the idea has not been entirely shelved. In fact, with more preparation time it is said that the scenario could eventually become reality by 2017/18.

Summer Special: South China vs Juventus

Published by:

It took a while before football fans in Hong Kong would be able to watch a reputable club from overseas – but the long wait has come to an end. On July 31st South China AA will take on Juventus Turin, aka the “Old Lady”, in an exhibition game at Hong Kong Stadium.

Ticket sales will start on June 23rd via www.cityline.com and will be priced between HK$ 300 and HK$ 680. However, there is doubt that we will see Juve’s biggest stars, in particular Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Paul Pogba, Patrice Evra, Mario Mandzukic, Alvaro Morata, and Sami Khedira, who are currently in action at the 2016 UEFA European Championship in France. All players are guaranteed a three-week-vacation – and with the final being scheduled for July 11th, that would probably mean that at least some of them won’t be able to make the journey to Hong Kong. We’ll keep you updated about the expected line-ups.
